□ Trainees at Hanawon, the Settlement Support Center for North Korean Refugees which is operated by the Ministry of Unification, visited the Central Service Center of Korean Red Cross (located in Jung-gu, Seoul) on February 6, 2018 to participate in the ‘Rice-cake Soup Sharing Event.’

o Volunteers at the Korean Red Cross and college volunteers for Hana Financial Group joined the Hanawon trainees for this event where they made rice-cake soup and dumplings to share with the homeless, the elderly living alone, and people in need in the Jongno-gu area.

□ Trainees at Hanawon particularly spent a memorable time and heightened their self-confidence as part of Korean society by helping those in need.

o Trainee Kim said, “I’ve always thought that taking care of myself was already hard enough for me after fleeing North Korea, but I’m overwhelmed by the fact that I can be of help for others who are in need.”

o Moreover, a college volunteer for Hana Financial Group said, “I rarely get to meet North Korean refugees, but I got to spend some time with them making rice-cake soup through this event and realized that they are an integral part of our communities and close neighbors.”

□ The director of Hanawon stated, “We will continuously participate in volunteer activities to help North Korean refugees share kindness as mature citizens of our communities who can live in harmony with their South Korean neighbors.”
