The Abductees Response Committee held for the first time in 11 years,
issues of abductees, detainees, and POWs were discussed at the
intergovernmental level
The 2023 Abductees Response Committee meeting was held (November 14)
On November 11, the Ministry of Unification held the Abductees
Response Committee meeting for the resolution of the issues of
abductees, detainees, and prisoners of war for the first time in 11
years, in accordance with the Prime Ministerial Directive “Regulations
on the Establishment and Operation of the Abductees Response Committee.”
The members of the committee evaluated the efforts of the
Unification Ministry to protect South Korean citizens by addressing
the issues of abductees and detainees and determined to pull all
ministries together to resolve the issues.
* The Abductees Response Committee: The Committee shall be chaired
by the Vice Minister of Unification and composed of officials from the
Office for Government Policy Coordination, Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, Ministry of Unification, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of
National Defense, National Intelligence Service, National Police
Agency, as well as relevant personnel from the Korean Red Cross. The
Committee shall formulate comprehensive plans related to the issue of
abductees, and deliberate on the direction and solutions for current affairs.
The Committee, in particular, committed to call domestic attention
to the issues of abductees, detainees, and prisoners of war, and
expand efforts to reveal the abduction and detainment issues brought
about by North Korea to the international community.
Furthermore, the members made the decision to devise various ways to
make the North come forward onto the right path such as urging North
Korea to immediately send South Koreans detained in the North back
home.
