On August 16, Unification Minister Kim Yung Ho attended the Press
Conference/Seminar on the Forced Repatriation of North Korean Escapees
detained in China and delivered a congratulatory message.
“North Korean defectors in China should be recognized as refugees
who have the right to have their lives and human rights protected,”
Kim said in his congratulatory message.
Minister Kim emphasized that “they should be granted humane
treatment under the international standards, and be able to enter
countries that they are hoping to go to, including South Korea.”
“We call for cooperation from the Chinese government over the issues
of the detention of North Korean defectors in China and their forced
repatriation to the North,” the minister added.
Moreover, he highlighted that “the South Korean government will
accept all North Korean defectors who wish to come to the South.”
“The government will do its best to ensure that North Korean
defectors in China and other countries can enter South Korea swiftly
and safely and proudly settle in as a member of the Korean society,”
he said.
