On August 16, Unification Minister Kim Yung Ho attended the Press Conference/Seminar on the Forced Repatriation of North Korean Escapees detained in China and delivered a congratulatory message.

“North Korean defectors in China should be recognized as refugees who have the right to have their lives and human rights protected,” Kim said in his congratulatory message.

Minister Kim emphasized that “they should be granted humane treatment under the international standards, and be able to enter countries that they are hoping to go to, including South Korea.”

“We call for cooperation from the Chinese government over the issues of the detention of North Korean defectors in China and their forced repatriation to the North,” the minister added.

Moreover, he highlighted that “the South Korean government will accept all North Korean defectors who wish to come to the South.”

“The government will do its best to ensure that North Korean defectors in China and other countries can enter South Korea swiftly and safely and proudly settle in as a member of the Korean society,” he said.
