Notice about South Korean Art Group’s Performance in Pyeongyang


A performing arts group and a Taekwondo demonstration team from South Korea departed from Gimpo Airport at 10 a.m. on March 31st (Saturday), headed for Pyeongyang. Do Jong-hwan, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, shared some words at a public address made before the groups’ departure, saying “I ask for the support and backing of the public so that a warm, peaceful energy may spread over the Korean Peninsula”, and “We will do our best, together with these pop culture artists, to ensure that this historial performance in Pyeongyang, the first of its kind in 13 years, will be carried out successfully.”

The “South Korean Performing Arts Group Performance in Pyeongyang to Commence Peaceful North-South Cooperation“ was put on at the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre on April 1st (Sunday). The performance, which embodied the theme ‘Spring is Coming’, included 11 performance teams/singers: Cho Yong-pil, Choi Jin-hee, Lee Sun-hee, Yoon Do-hyun, Baek Ji-young, Jeong In, Ali, Seohyun, Kim Gwang-min, and the girl group Red Velvet.

The performance’s attendees included North Korea’s Chairman Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju, his younger sister Kim Yo-jong who is the 1st assistant minister of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea, President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly Kim Yong-nam, Vice-Chairman Choe Hwi, Chairperson of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland Ri Son-gwon, and Park Chun-nam.

Meanwhile, on the same day, April 1st (Sunday), 20 members of a World Taekwondo (WT) demonstration team gave their own performance, consisting of a demonstration of Poomsae, at the Pyongyang Taekwondo Hall’s main performance venue.

On April 2nd (Monday), the Taekwondo demonstration team will participate in a joint performance with an ITF Taekwondo demo team at the Pyongyang Grand Theatre. On April 3rd (Tuesday) the South Korean performing arts group will put on a joint performance with a North Korean art group at the Ryugyong Chung Ju-yung Gymnasium, after which they plan to return to Incheon Airport late that same night.
