□ The Ministry of Unification published the 2018 White Paper on Korean Unification to help the people better understand the government’s overall policy on unification and North Korea in 2017.

o The 2018 White Paper on Korean Unification has seven chapters: Policy Toward North Korea, Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation, Inter-Korean Humanitarian Issues, Inter-Korean Dialogue, Settlement Support for North Korean Defectors, Unification Education, and Consolidating the Foundation for Implementation of Policy.

o The 2018 White Paper on Korean Unification expounds on the Moon Jae-in administration’s policy on the Korean Peninsula, which is intended to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and establish lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula; sustain the development of inter-Korean relations; and realize a new economic community on the Korean Peninsula. It also introduces the government’s diverse efforts to achieve these goals.

※ The White Paper on Korean Unification was first published in 1990. Although it was originally meant to be published biannually, the Ministry decided to publish it every year in 1993. Since then, it has been published every year except 1999 and 2011.

o Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon said in the preface that “2017 was a year when the government worked hard to restore inter-Korean relations and peace on the Korean Peninsula amid a grave security situation.”

- He continued, “It will do its best to establish structural peace on the Korean Peninsula and open a new future where both South and North Korea can be prosperous. It will gather the power and wisdom of the people to sustainably develop inter-Korean relations, which will in turn lead to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, creating a virtuous cycle.”

□ Ten thousand copies of the 2018 White Paper on Korean Unification will be distributed to the National Assembly, public libraries, government agencies, educational institutions, media organizations, civic organizations, and unification experts.
The full text of the 2018 White Paper on Korean Unification will be posted on the Unification Ministry’s website (www.unikorea.go.kr) on April 13 so that anyone can access it anytime, anywhere.
