On October 6, the South Korean delegation to an inter-Korean event
marking the October 4 Joint Declaration returned from its three-day
visit to Pyeongyang.
The 160-member delegation including
Democratic Party leader Lee Hae-chan and Unification Minister Cho
Myoung-gyon boarded planes at 8:35 p.m. and arrived at Seoul Air Base
via a direct route along the west coast.
The delegation arrived in Pyeongyang on October 4 to participate in
an event at the People’s Palace of Culture marking the 11th
anniversary of the October 4 Joint Declaration on October 5. It was
the first such event since the late former President of the ROK Roh
Moo-hyun and the late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il signed the
October 4 Joint Declaration in 2007.
Following the event, South and North Korea held high-level
inter-Korean talks and discussed ways to implement the Pyeongyang
Joint Declaration, with Minister Cho and Ri Son Gwon, chairman of the
Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country, in attendance.
Before returning to Seoul, the delegation looked around the tree
planted by the late President Roh and Kim Yong Nam, president of the
Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People’s Assembly, at the time when the
October 4 Joint Declaration was adopted.
This event was held in accordance with the agreements included in
the Pyeongyang Joint Declaration signed last month by President Moon
Jae-in and Chairman Kim Jong Un.
