Unification Minister Cho gives a special lecture at the Buddhist Forum

Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon gave a special lecture at the Buddhist Forum hosted by the Buddhist Television Network (BTN) and held at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul on November 26.

“President Moon Jae-in told some 150,000 Pyeongyang citizens at the Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyeongyang that if the North gives up its nuclear program, there would be a bright future in which they can achieve economic development,” Minister Cho said. “We need to reassure the North that denuclearization is the right way to go.”

Regarding the North Korea-US negotiations, “North Korea should scrap its nuclear program and the US should reciprocate by providing security guarantees. They have yet to reach that stage,” the Minister said. “Each side says that it will take the required measures if the other side moves first. As it is, no progress has yet been made.”

He went on to say, “North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is more determined than ever to attain the objective by giving up the nuclear program. The North is channeling all its energy into economic development (with the aim of proudly ranking among the advanced countries by 2020).”

With regard to economic cooperation with the North, Minister Cho said, “The mere fact that we are all Korean does not guarantee that we will have any opportunity when the nuclear issue is addressed and sanctions are finally lifted.
We cannot just sit back and watch from the sidelines. We may, in fact, be at a disadvantage.”

In our implementation of inter-Korean military agreements, he said, “We are proceeding only with the matters in which the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff and the United Nations Command together confirm that there are no problems. The Korean people need not be concerned about any weakening of our security posture.”
