Unification Minister Kim meets with WFP Executive Director David Beasley

On May 13, Unification Minister Kim Yeon Chul met with David Beasley, the Executive Director for the World Food Programme (WFP) at the Government Complex Seoul. They discussed food aid to North Korea.

Minister Kim said, “I carefully read ‘Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) - FAO/WFP Joint Rapid Food Security Assessment.’ I agree with the WFP’s basic position that humanitarian aid should be separated from politics.”

He added, “I hope that the Ministry of Unification and the WFP should closely work together on humanitarian assistance to North Korea.”

WFP Executive Director Beasley said, “Politics and humanitarian matters should be separated while continuing to cooperate with the Korean government. I will strive to address humanitarian issues as the Korean people want.”

In the joint report released on May 3, the WFP and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced that the reduced harvest, coupled with increased post-harvest losses, has led to an uncovered food deficit of 1.36 million metric tons after considering the commercial import capacity of the country between November 2018 and October 2019.
