Twenty nine years ago, on October 3, East and West Germany at last
became one. Their reunification was a stunning miracle and came about
as a result of determination to overcome the Cold War and conflict.
Berlin officially designated October 3 as German Unity Day to
celebrate this epochal event indefinitely into the future.
Unification Minister Kim Yeon Chul, in his speech at a reception
celebrating German Unity Day, looked back on the path Germany had
walked to reunification and said, “The East and West Germans were able
to build greater understanding and trust of each other through
exchange and cooperation in various fields before reunification.” He
also emphasized, “I hope that Germany and Korea, as trusting partners,
move forward together to achieve peace, a universal value of humanity.”
