On November 20 (local time), the 2019 Korea Global Forum for Peace (KGFP) was held at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, DC.
US experts in matters of the Korean Peninsula had in-depth discussions at the forum.
Unification Minister Kim Yeon Chul, in his keynote speech titled “Change in the Trilateral Relations between South and North Korea and the US,” emphasized that real progress in matters of the Korean Peninsula has been made, specifically because the bilateral relationships between the two Koreas and the US, as well as inter-Korean relations, have developed in parallel and created a virtuous cycle.

[Need for a more drastic change in inter-Korean relations]
Regarding the issues of separated families and the Mount Geumgang tourism project, Minister Kim said, “The ROK government is consistent in that all the matters of inter-Korean relations should be addressed through dialogue and consultation. Once the South and the North sit face-to-face, the two Koreas can find feasible, creative solutions that satisfy both sides.”

Unification Minister Kim said, “It is desirable to resume follow-up negotiations as soon as possible so as not to lose the momentum for negotiations. Dialogue is the only solution.” He also underscored, “At the same time, both sides should explore creative ways to build trust early on.”
The Unification Minister continued, “If measures are taken to build greater trust between Pyeongyang and Washington, there would be another opportunity to take concrete actions for denuclearization and establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula….Now is the time for North Korea and the US to put an end to their long-standing hostilities.”

[ROK-US cooperation that does much for progress in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula and for the national interests of both countries]
Minister Kim said, “The ROK and the US will continue to work together and build peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.”

The 2019 Korea Global Forum for Peace (KGFP) is hosted by the ROK Ministry of Unification and jointly organized by the Sejong Institute and the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP).
