On September 1, Unification Minister Lee In-young met with Japanese Ambassador to the ROK Koji Tomita, who made a courtesy visit to the new minister. They discussed various issues of mutual interest including ROK-Japan relations, inter-Korean relations, and the overall situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Minister Lee stated, “The ROK government will restore inter-Korean dialogue; carry forward humanitarian cooperation, inter-Korean exchange and cooperation, and small-scale trading; and implement the agreements between the two Koreas.”

He asked Japan to “support the ROK government’s efforts to restore and develop inter-Korean relations because stabilization and development of the situation on the Korean Peninsula through improved cross-border relations will lead to peace and stability in Northeast Asia, which ultimately benefits Japan as well.”

The Unification Minister added, “Japan is a neighbor we should work together with in the journey towards peace on the Korean Peninsula. I hope that the energy of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics will carry on into the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and, thus, that these three bright lights will bring peace and stability to Northeast Asia.”
