North Korean workers at Gaeseong Industrial Complex(GIC) exceeded 30,000

According to the statistics released by Gaeseong Industrial Complex Zone Support Foundation (chairman: Shin Eon-sang), the number of North Korean workers working at GIC reached 30,084, with five companies including PyoungAn Co., LTD recruiting 282 new workers on July 4.

- The number of North Korean workers was 255 in December 2004 and exceeded one thousand and two thousand in November 2006 and November 2007, respectively. In seven months after exceeding 20,000, the number exceeded 30,000, on a par with the speed of development of complex.

- As of July 4, 72 companies are operating, about 50 companies are building factories and around 1,300 South Korean workers are working at GIC.

- As to the type of companies, 4,000 North Korean workers are working for 30 companies operating at apartment-type factories, 2,200 workers are working for Samduk Starfild and 1,300 workers for PyongAn Co., LTD. The average number of personnel per company is 418.

The output of companies operating at GIC recorded 373.8 million dollars as of the end of May, up 147% year-on-year from 151 million dollars

- The cumulative output of companies at GIC was only 15 million dollars at the end of 2005. However, it has continuously increased, recording 89 million dollars at the end of 2006, 100 million dollars in January 2007, 200 million dollars in September 2007, and 300 million dollars in March 2008.

- The continuous increase in the output of companies at GIC is due to the rise in the number of companies operating at GIC (in May 2007, 39 companies were operating). However, considering 33 out of 72 companies at GIC have been operating there for less than one year, such growth in the production is remarkable
