Press Release (April 6, 2010)

North Korean defectors to get a 50 percent discount for a driving lesson

l      The Ministry of Unification and the Federation of Specialized Driver Training Schools are going to sign a memorandum of understanding at the central government complex tomorrow. The contract is to allow North Korean defectors to cut their driving lesson fees in half.

-               The Ministry had decided to give North Korean defectors discounts on driving lessons as a major project in 2010 and asked for the Federation s cooperation on December 7, 2009.

-               The Ministry of Public Administration and Security as well asked our Ministry to push the project as part of efforts to enhance laws and systems for the minority in Korea on December 11, 2009.

-               After a couple of negotiations, the Ministry and the Federation agreed to sign the contract on April 1, 2010.

l      Thanks to the MOU, North Korean defectors could get a 50% discount when they take a driving lesson at one of the 410 driving schools which have joined the Federation. This would help defectors to have a driver s license more easily.

-               Normal lesson fees: Class A Driver license (around 1.1 m), Class B Driver License (around 950,000)

-               The agreement is expected to be a big help for defectors in getting a job.
