Press Release (April 8, 2010)

The Government s position on the statement of North Korea s Guidance Bureau for Comprehensive Development of Scenic Spots

l      Regrettably, the spokesman of North Korea s Guidance Bureau for Comprehensive Development of Scenic Spots announced a statement that the North would freeze some facilities in the Mt. Geumgang resort area, expel maintenance workers and nullify contracts with several South Korean businesses. He also said in the statement Pyongyang would seek a new partner to resume trips to Mt. Geumgang.

l      As we have said, the North Korea s unilateral move of freezing South Korean property violates inter-Korean business contracts and agreements, and goes against international norms. The measure, therefore, must be withdrawn immediately.

l      The issue of tours to Mt. Geumgang and Gaeseong should be resolved through high-level dialogue between North and South Korea.

l      We want to emphasize that all responsibilities for possible consequences go to North Korea.
