Press Release (June 24, 2010)

The 2nd homecoming event to be held to celebrate the 11th anniversary of Hanawon

l      The settlement support center for North Korean defectors or Hanawon is scheduled to host a homecoming event to celebrate its 11th anniversary on June 26.

l      Sixty former North Koreans who graduated from Hanawon and are now successfully becoming members of South Korea got the invitation.

l      The event is designed to help current Hanawon trainees to make fewer mistakes in settling in the South by sharing former North Korean defectors vivid experience and building a good relationship with them.

l      It could be a good opportunity for the trainees to see how well former defectors are doing in South Korea at a time when more than 20,000 North Koreans are living here.

l      Hanawon graduates as well could feel at home and renew their resolve they had when they left the center.

l      The 1st homecoming event was held last year on the occasion of the center s 10th anniversary, getting enthusiastic responses from the guests.

l      Hanawon was established to give settlement support to North Korean defectors on July 8, 1999. Since then, there have been around 17,000 people who finished education and training for adaptation to a new life in the South at the center.
