Press Release (July 21, 2010)

An MOU signed to expand legal services for North Korean resettlers

Minister of Unification and President of the Korean Bar Association (KBA) signed an memorandum of understanding at the Central Government Complex at 11:30 a.m. July 21. The agreement is on provision of legal services for North Korean defectors living in South Korea.

Under the agreement, the Ministry and the KBA will provide various legal services including legal counseling, education and aid to North Korean resettlers.

l      Those who are now being trained at Hanawon, the state-run facility for the education of North Korean defectors, will be given legal education and counseling.

l      A lawyer to give legal advice will be sent to an agency supporting North Korean resettlers.

l      Thirty Hana Centers, the government-run facilities to help North Korean settle in South Korea, will have lawyers designated by the government.

A manual for legal counseling to North Korean defectors will be written jointly by the Ministry and the KBA.

North Korean resettlers unfamiliar with our laws and institutions have faced various difficulties. The agreement signed today is expected to help them settle successfully in our society by providing legal services throughout the country in a more systemic way.
