625 students from home and abroad start March for Peace and Unification

 

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, the Ministry of Unification holds an event titled March for Peace and Unification from July 26 to 31 with 625 students including those from foreign countries that sent combat troops to South Korea during the war.

 

l       Participants will be reminded of the value of peace and the importance of unification by visiting areas near the DMZ and major battle fields for 6 days.

 

The launching ceremony is going to be held at the Seoul Education and Culture Center in the morning on Tuesday, July 27. After the ceremony, participants divided into two groups are going to take the eastern and the western routes respectively.

 

l       They are joined by Hyun In-taek, Minister of Unification; Lee Hong-gu, Chairman of the 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee; Oh Eun-sun, a world-famous climber and the leader of the event; Hilton A. Dennis, South African Ambassador to Korea; and other distinguished guests at the ceremony.

 

The eastern route is going to be taken by high school and university students who are scheduled to march from Goseong (July 27) to Yanggu (July 28), Hwacheon (July 29), Cholwon (July 30) and Paju (July 31).

 

l       On July 28, Minister Hyun, Leader Oh, military officials and entertainment soldiers will join students to climb the Gachilbong, the only mountaintop that belongs to South Korea among 12,000 peaks of Mt. Geumgang.

 

l       On July 29, students are going to participate in filming a KBS quiz variety show called Challenge for Unification Golden Bell after visiting the Bimok Park and the Peace Dam in Hwacheon.

 

The western route is going to be taken by middle school students who are scheduled to march from Ganghwa (July 27 to 28) to Gimpo (July 29) to Paju (July 30).

 

l       Participants on this route are going to engage in various programs including getting on board a South Korean Marine amphibious assault vehicle, Mani Mt. trekking, biking along the ceasefire line.

 

l       On July 30, students are going to visit Daeseong-dong (known as Freedom Village ) Elementary School and do activities focused on unification.

 

On July 31, all participants will converge at Imjingak in Paju and go to Panmunjeom and Dorasan Station together. KBS s Open Concert will be the finale to the six-day journey.
