Press Release (September 1, 2010)

A day care center opened at the GIC

A 953 square-meter child care center was opened at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex on September 1.

The facility was established to give child care support to North Korean female workers at the complex so that they could boost their productivity and profitability of their employers.

l      The construction started on September 24, 2009 and finished on December 26, 2009. The North provided land and the South financed it with 900 million won from the Inter-Korean Cooperation Fund worth 900 million won.

l      The Koreas have discussed how to operate the center after the center was built.

North Korea will rent for free and manage the facility owned by South Korea.

l      Companies doing business there can let their North Korean female employees use it by paying around $15 per child.

l      Five hundred children along with two hundred who have been cared for at a temporary care center to date are expected to be supported at the new one.
