Press Release (September 14, 2010)

Revising the Enforcement Decree of the Kaesong Industrial Zone Support Act was considered by cabinet members

Following the revision of the Kaesong Industrial Zone Support Act which was promulgated on March 26, amending its enforcement decree was considered at a cabinet meeting on September 14.

l      In line with the purpose of the revised act, the amended enforcement decree specifies how to support South Korean companies that have invested in the zone when the situation there gets worse. It also stipulates how to provide safety education to their South Korean employees working there.

l      When their employees are banned by North Korea from going in and out of the zone, and when production and shipment are suspended for more than 1 month, South Korean investors can be supported.

- The consultative meeting on promotion of inter-Korean exchanges and cooperation can decide when, how and how much the companies would be supported within 1 month after they get damaged.

l      For safety concerns, South Korean employees staying in the zone would be given more education. Those who are deployed to the zone usually take safety education only once just before they get into there.

The revised enforcement decree is going to be put into force from September 27 after being signed by the president.

l      It is expected to allow South Korean investors to do their business stably in the Kaesong Industrial Zone and secure safety guarantee for their employees working there.
