A foundation to support North Korean defectors is established on September 27
A foundation to help North Korean defectors settle in South Korea announces its establishment officially at its 1st board of directors meeting on September 27. The move is based on the revised act on protection and support for North Korean defectors which was promulgated on March 26.
[Goals] To provide settlement assistance to North Korean defectors by offering job opportunities, training and scholarship
To hire professional counselors and give counseling services to defectors
To work with private organizations to support them
To develop policies and do research
To conduct surveys and build databases
To do projects commissioned by the government (Article 30, Section 4)
[Composition of executives] Ten members including Chairman, Auditor and Directors consist of the executive board. The chairman is appointed by the Unification Minister with recommendation from the board. (Article 30, Section 5)
[Financing] It is financially supported by the government s contribution or grants. (Article 30, Section 7)
Six directors who attend the 1st meeting are selected first.

Place: Tho Lim (a Chinese restaurant), 37F, the Lotte Hotel
Participants: 6 directors including Um Jong-sik,, Vice Unification Minister
The chairman is going to be named with recommendation from the board of directors and the official launching ceremony will be held early November.
By the end of this year, recruiting and building business plans will be finished so that the foundation can be fully operated as soon as possible.
