A fact-finding committee on Korean War abduction holds its first meeting and opens a secretariat

 

A committee established under the act on Korean War abductees which was taken effect from September 27 will holds its first meeting and a ceremony to launch a secretariat. The meeting is going to be at the Prime Minister s Office from 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 13 followed by the launching ceremony at a grand auditorium of the central government complex from 4:30 p. m. on the same day.

 

Members of the Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification Committee of the National Assembly will join the event along with related public and private organizations and 100 people from families of the abducted by North Korea during the Korean War. Some family members will read their letters aloud to their beloved ones who they believe have been detained in North Korea. After Yu Jong-ryeol, the head of the secretariat, introduces the committee and its work briefly, Minister Hyun will deliver his commemoratory remarks and then the reception party will start.

 

Through the committee s work, the Government will get to the bottom of Korean War abduction by the North and will be more committed to restoring honor to the abductees and their families.

 

l       Local governments and diplomatic offices overseas will begin getting reports on cases of the abduction, and the committee will examine and make decisions on them from next January.

 

Several measures to restore honor to the abducted and their families will be taken based on the result. We will also consider discussion between the South and the North to confirm the fates and whereabouts of the missing and to arrange family reunions.
