Press Release (January 20)

South Korean Government s Stance on

North Korea s Proposal for Military-Level Talks

On January 10th, spokesperson representing Ministry of Unification delivered a comment proposing inter-Korean talks between government officials. The South proposed the talk to confirm North Korea s commitment to 1) responsible measures for Cheonan Corvette sinking, artillery attack on Yeonpyon Island and refraining from further provocative actions 2) the sincerity of denuclearization.

In this regard, the North today sent a letter signed by Kim Yong-chun, the Minister of the People s Armed Forces to Kim Kwan-jin, the Minister of National Defense of the South. The North requested to hold high-ranking military talks because the meeting agenda suggested by the South was about military issue. The North suggested to express views on Cheonan Corvette sinking and shelling of Yeonpyong Island as well as to ease the military tension on the Korean Peninsula.

We have continuously emphasized the necessity of the North s commitment to

1) responsible measures for Cheonan Corvette sinking, artillery attack on Yeonpyon Island and refraining from further provocative actions 2) the sincerity of denuclearization.

Therefore, South Korean government will take part in the high-level military meeting and offer preliminary meetings within the same context.

The South also plans to propose separate high-level official meetings which are expected to be necessary in confirming the North s sincerity for denuclearization.

Further details will be discussed with the related parties.
