Policy Briefing on 2008 MOU Work Plan

On March 31, Ministry of Unification held a briefing on MOU Work Plans for the Year 2008 for diplomats working in Seoul. Director General Kim, Chun Sigof the Unification Policy Bureau gave his opening remarks, which was followed by presentation on the work plans and Q&A session.

Participants asked mainly about current situations of inter-Korean relations, ways to strengthen transparency of aid toward North Korea, the North's response to the new administration's policy toward it and implementation of existing inter-Korean agreements.

Regarding recent actions by the North, the unification policy chief stressed North Korea needs to change its approach to inter-Korean relations with sincerity.

He also said the Korean government will remain unchanged in its North Korea policy and respond to the North actions in a calm manner. He added the policy direction of promoting inter-Korean relations and peace on the Korean Peninsula through exchanges and cooperation was still effective. DG Kim forecasted North Korea would resume inter-Korean relations in the end citing it's acknowledgement of the need for advancing the bilateral relations.

As for existing agreements between the two Koreas, he explained the government would consider progress in the North Korean nuclear issue, economic feasibility, financial capability and national consensus before implementing the agreements.
