Joint Statement from Hyundai Group in the South and KAPPC in the North


 

Overview

Hyun Jung-eun, chairwoman of Hyundai Group visited the North from August 10 to 17 and had a meeting with Kim Jong-Il on August 16. After the meeting, Hyundai Group and Korea Asia Pacific Peace Committee (KAPPC) issued a joint statement on August 17.

At the invitation of KAPPC, Hyun Jung-eun visited Pyongyang and met with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il on August 16.

- Kim Yang-gun Kim Yang-gon, the commissioner of KAPPC has participated in this meeting.

 

Kim Jong-Il reminded fond memories of predecessors from Hyundai Group and had talks in a friendly atmosphere. Kim Jong-Il hosted a breakfast meeting for Hyun Jung-eun and her delegation.

DPRK’s leader Kim Jong-Il met with Hyun Jung-eun and her delegation on August 16, 2009. They talked for a long time in a friendly mood and accepted all her requests.


Accordingly, KAPPC and Hyundai Group will implement the followings :

 

1. The suspended Mt.Geumgang tourism will be resumed soon and new tour for Birobong will start in Mt. Geumgang. According to special measures taken by Kim Jong-Il, all conveniences and safety will be strictly guaranteed for the tourism projects.



2. South Korean nationals’ DMZ border passage and their staying in the North will return to the original status in Mt. Geungang according to Oct.4 Declaration.

 

3. AS the DMZ border passage normalizes, Gaeseong Tourism will resume soon and Gaeseong Industrial Complex Projects will be revitalized.

 

4. Hyundai agreed to start Mt. Baekdu tourism according to preparation works.

 

5. Separated families will be reunited on the upcoming Chuseok Holiday in Mt. Geunmgang.

 

The two sides announced their willingness to develop many cooperative projects to upgrade inter-Korean relations and realize mutual prosperity according to historical June 15 Joint Declaration and Oct 4 Declaration.

 

Analysis

This joint statement is an agreement between Hyundai, the main player of these projects, and KAPPC.

- This agreement is meaningful and it is a private-level one. For detailed implementation plans, inter-Korean dialogues are needed in detail.
