2014 MOU Work Plan Presented to the President

 

 “Establishing the Foundation for a Unification Era on the Korean Peninsula”
 

 

□ Ministry of Unification briefed President Park Geun-hye on its 2014 Work Plan and had a discussion session at the Ministry of National Defense on Thursday (Feb.6) at 10 A.M.

 

□ To activate the Trust-building Process on the Korean Peninsula in earnest for the “Korea Bonanza with Unification,” the Unification Ministry presented concrete projects and work plans.

 

o The Ministry will: Promote agro-livestock and forestry cooperation by way of strengthening collaboration with international non-governmental organizations(NGOs) to ensure practical improvement in the livelihood of North Korean people, establish ‘history foundation for peace and unification(tentatively named),’ construct governance for peace and unification through cooperation between the government·private·research organizations.

 

o Through such endeavors, the Park Geun-hye administration in its second year will pave the way to open a unification era achieving tangible outcome on North Korea and unification policies that Koreans can personally experience.

 

□ Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae has set ‘paving the way for peace and unification through trust and cooperation’ as the policy objective and presented three major strategies to build the foundation for a unification era on the Korean Peninsula.

 

Establish sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula: On the basis of strong security, the Unification Ministry will strive to build trust through inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation. Also, by denuclearizing North Korea and building political and military trust with the North, we will build the foundation for peace.

 

Activate the Trust-building Process on the Korean Peninsula in earnest: While making efforts to solve North Korean’s humanitarian issues, we will promote inter-Korean exchanges in ways that are mutually beneficial and helpful in recovering the homogeneity of the two sides.

 

Prepare for a Unification Era on the Korean Peninsula: We will transform our community into a ‘unification-friendly’ society by enhancing unification awareness. Also, we will build the foundation for unification internally and externally through a cooperative pan-governmental and pan-societal preparation system for unification.

 

□ Based on these three major strategies, the Unification Ministry plans to put forward nine core tasks in 2014.

Offer unification education to nurture the future generation of the unification era

Provide customized resettlement support for North Korean refugees for the unification era

Stimulate international cooperation to increase and spread support for unification
