[The Sixth Korea-Germany Joint Consultation Committee on National Unification is Held]

□ The Ministry of Unification and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy hold the sixth Korea-Germany Joint Consultation Committee on National Unification on May 25-27 in Berlin, Germany.

The Ministry of Unification signed an "MOU on cooperation in preparing for unification" with the German Federal Ministry of the Interior in October 2010 and has held a meeting of the Korea-Germany Joint Consultation Committee on National Unification every year since 2011 to glean important lessons from the German experience in reunification and integration.
* The task of the "Federal Government Commissioner for the New Federal States" in charge of the development of Eastern German States was transferred from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy in December 2013.

□ At the meeting, Germany will be represented by nine committee members and six experts who played an important role in Germany's reunification and integration, led by Iris Gleicke, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy and Federal Government Commissioner for the New Federal States.

The Korean delegation consisting of nine committee members and four experts will be led by Vice Minister of Unification Hwang Bu-gi.

□ In the five previous meetings, the committee members from Korea and Germany discussed the German experience in integration and its implications for the Korean Peninsula with respect to politics, diplomacy, the economy, welfare, and liquidation of the past after reunification.

o At the sixth meeting, the committee members plan to share the German experience in reunification and integration with respect to political and civic education, and integration of educational systems, and to exchange opinions on its implications for the Korean Peninsula.

o The meeting will consist of the following five sessions: Germany’s Political Education Before Reunification (first session), Unification Education in Korea (second session), Germany’s Political Education After Reunification and Its Implications for a Unified Korean Peninsula (third session), Education in East and West Germany Before and After Reunification and Integration of Educational Systems (fourth session), and the Direction of Integration of Educational Systems in Korea (fifth session).

□ The Ministry of Unification will fully support the Korea-Germany Joint Consultation Committee on National Unification to ensure that the Committee can indeed help Korea prepare for unification and integration on the Korean Peninsula, and the Ministry hopes that cooperation between Korea and Germany will be further expanded with regard to unification.
