□ The government intends to operate a Joint Government Support Corps
to provide well-organized, safe support for the North’s athletes
taking part in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics,
as agreed during inter-Korean high-level talks held on January 9.
o The corps will start operating in the
Office of Inter-Korean Dialogue from January 16.
It will be composed of 20-plus members, divided into General Planning
Team, Olympics Operation Team, Event Support Team, and External
Cooperation Team, dispatched from the Ministry of Unification (MOU),
the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (MCST), and the
PyeongChang Winter Olympics Organizing Committee.
□ The Joint Government Support Corps will provide support for △
consultations between ministries and agencies, △ activities and events
of the North Korean delegation, △ and public relations. Upon the
arrival of the North Korean delegation, the corps will be expanded and
reorganized into a Joint Government Management Corps.
o During the North Korean delegation’s stay, the government will
provide the necessary accommodations according to inter-Korean
agreements, and international regulations and customs, while
maintaining the framework of current international sanctions. It is
hoped that the North’s participation in the PyeongChang Winter
Olympics will contribute to the improvement of inter-Korean relations
and the peaceful settlement of the Korean Peninsula.
