Unification Ministry’s statement
regarding the shooting of our national near Yeonpyeong Island
September 24, 2020
The Ministry of Unification expresses its deepest condolences over
the death of our national who was killed by North Korean soldiers
after going missing in the waters near Yeonpyeong Island on September
21, and states its position as follows.
The Ministry strongly condemns North Korea’s act of shooting an
unarmed South Korean and burning his body - it is an act against
humanity that cannot be justified under any circumstance.
We sternly protest against the North’s act as it dampens our
consistent patience and efforts for reconciliation and peace between
the two Koreas, and goes against the Korean people’s yearning for
peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The Unification Ministry strongly urges the North to clearly reveal
who is responsible, and take all necessary measures including an
explanation of how it will prevent a recurrence of such an incident.
