The 2024 International Dialogue on North Korean Human Rights slated for expansion to strengthen international solidarity and cooperation

January 9, 2024

In 2024, the Ministry of Unification is set to host the 2024 International Dialogue on North Korean Human Rights with the goal of broadening discussions and fostering communication and cooperation on North Korean human rights together with the international community.

The Ministry of Unification has been organizing the International Dialogue on North Korean Human Rights annually in Seoul since 2022, inviting prominent figures from both domestic and international arenas to engage in in-depth discussions on North Korean human rights. Each year, the dialogue attracted approximately 100 citizens, and was broadcast live on YouTube.

With growing emphasis on the necessity for international solidarity and cooperation to improve North Korean human rights, the 2024 International Dialogue on North Korean Human Rights is slated for expansion. This year’s dialogue will be held in two sessions overseas — at Washington, D.C. in June and at Geneva, Switzerland in November — providing an opportunity to closely communicate with the international community.

The June event aims to serve as an opportunity to disseminate the realities of North Korean human rights to the international community in line with the publication of Korean and English versions of the 2024 North Korean Human Rights Report set to add momentum. The November session will focus on consolidating the voice of the international community, calling for the improvement of North Korean human rights in Geneva, the hub of international human rights activities, including the UN Human Rights Council.

The Unification Ministry will invite both domestic and international experts on North Korean human rights and create a platform where the North Korean human rights issue can be discussed from diverse perspectives. The Ministry will also provide a platform for domestic and international private organizations to share their experiences and facilitate mutual exchange.

The Ministry of Unification will persist in its efforts to raise awareness and garner interest in North Korean human rights within the international community.
