Congratulatory Speech

By Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon (Read by the President of the Institute for
Unification Education)

1.
Good morning.
It is good to see you all.
I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to you on holding a workshop on communication and consensus-building on unification for the 21st cohort of unification education officials.

I would like to express my deep gratitude to Lee Hyun-sook, chairperson of the Central Council of Unification Education Officials; Yoo Ji-soo, chairperson of the Seoul Council of Unification Education Officials; and all others involved in arranging this meaningful event.

I would also like to extend my respects and thanks to the unification education officials from across the country for making time to join us today.

My special thanks also go to National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang for sending congratulatory messages via video and Song Young-gil of the Ruling Democratic Party of Korea for participating in person to grace this occasion.

2.
Unification education officials,
Last year, the Korean Peninsula began a long march toward peace, prosperity, and unification.

Separated family members were reunited, and severed roads were reconnected.
South and North Korea began to communicate with each other 24/7.

The DMZ areas were reborn as a land of peace. People in various fields from the South and the North met, communicated with each other, and then became one.

Building on these results, the government will do its best to make substantial progress in denuclearization and put inter-Korean relations into an orbit of sustainable development.

It is now working hard to ensure that Pyeongyang and Washington can resume their dialogue and reach an agreement.

It will further solidify the peace that we have established so far through sustainable development in inter-Korean relations and then prepare for a new era in which peace brings economic development.

I would like to ask the unification education officials to render support in order to ensure that the two wheels of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and development in inter-Korean relations can turn without coming to a halt.

3.
Unification education officials,
The need for peace and unification education will assume increasing importance as the  new era of peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula dawns upon us.
Every one of you has an important role to play in preparing for the era of peaceful coexistence and unification.

Dialogue and communication on unification issues should begin in local communities, the living places of the people.

I ask the unification education officials to build consensus on peace and unification among local residents based on your expertise and networks.

The government will do everything it can to support you in your efforts in the process.

I expect that this workshop will serve as a venue for unification education officials to effectively communicate with each other and build consensus, and I hope that the officials discuss specific ways to promote peace and unification education in local communities.

I wish everyone of you the best of health and happiness.

Thank you.
