o The Central Broadcasting Station reported on March 16 that chairman Kim Jong Il paid inspection visits to a duck farm and a fish farm under the KPA unit No. 233. He also inspected a land development project site in South Phyongan Province, according to Central Broadcasting Station and Pyongyang Broadcasting Service news on March 17.

o North Korea has proclaimed the 21st century as the "information era" and is making various efforts to promote informatization in all sectors of the society in the shortest time possible.

- North Korea will focus on development of software rather than hardware, as it is more advantageous in terms of capital, technology, and potential for growth in the shortest time.

o In an editorial carried by Education News dated March 4, North Korea urged schools, families and society as a whole to closely work together to nurture the nation's students into talented assets for revolution.

o In an editorial dated March 15, Rodong Sinmun stressed the role of young people as vanguards of the era saying, "Young men and women are urged to show their valiant spirits and mettle, as the Songun youth vanguards are based on all fronts to build the strong country", according to the Central Broadcasting Station on March 15.

o In January 2004, North Korea's steel export volume to China recorded US$ 7.09 million, a significant increase of 317.2 % compared to the same quarter of last year. Steel topped other items exported to China this year.

o North Korea decided to award the Songun Beacon Award to the best performing companies and factories that achieved production goals last year, reported the Central Broadcasting Station on March 11. 

o A group meeting to study literature thought of Juche ideology was held in Pyongyang to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Kim Jong Il's instruction of a revolutionary play, 'Blood Wrath in the International Peace Conference' according to North Korean Central News Agency on March 16.

Relations with South Korea

o Reacting to the South Korean National Assembly's passage of a motion to impeach its president, North Korea strongly criticized the U.S. and South Korea's opposition parties, as well as the South Korean government for discussing the 'watch condition'.

o A spokesperson for North Korea's KPA Panmunjeom Mission held a KCNA briefing on March 14, condemning the ROK-US Combined Forces Command exercise RSOI / Foal Eagle, calling it an obvious attempt to provoke war by launching a preemptive attack against the DPRK,' according to a news report by Central Broadcasting Station on March 14.

o In a statement issued by a spokesperson for the National Reconciliation Committee on March 12, North Korea denounced South Korea's Keynote Strategy on National Security as a hostile Cold War policy against the DPRK.'

External Affairs

o North Korea criticized Japan's issuance of stamps referring to Tok Island as Takeshima, a Japanese territory, and condemned the move as anachronistic preparations to invade the Korean peninsula again by causing a `Tok Island dispute,' according to North Korea Central News Agency on March 13.

o The delegation of the North Korea's Supreme People's Assembly, headed by chairman of the SPA Choe Thae Bok, visited the Czech Republic March 10~15 and Great Britain March 15~18, according to reports on March 12, 14, and 17 by the Central Broadcasting Station and Pyongyang Broadcasting Service.

o A UNICEF delegation headed by Executive Director Carol Bellamy visited North Korea March 13~15, and met with Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, Choe Su Hon and vice foreign minister, among others, according to a KCNA report on March 15.

o The Central Broadcasting Station reported on March 16 that Ho Jong was appointed as the new ambassador to Kuwait. Ho is a well-known North Korean diplomat in the Western world.
