1. Internal Affairs

o Chairman Kim Jong-il, accompanied by vice marshal Kim Young-choon and general Hyeon Cheol-hae, visited military unit 2734, a troop honored with the Oh Jeung-heup's Seventh Regiment title, according to the Central Broadcasting Station October 6.

o North Korea held the second national presentation of nano-science and technology at the Kim Chaek Politechnic University September 22-23, according to the Korean Central News Agency September 24.

o North Korea held the second national competition and exhibition of programs October 1 at Pyongyang's Three Revolution Exhibition Hall in the presence of vice premier Ro Du-cheol.

o North Korea held the 23rd Yoon I-sang Concert at Pyongyang's Moranbong Theater October 5-7, according to the Central Broadcasting Station October 6.

o North Korea propagandized October 6 that the "Kim Jong-il Flower" had formally been registered with an international society of horticulture as a new variety of begonia.

o On the sixth anniversary of chairman Kim Jong-il's statement ''Concerning Revolutionizing Potato Farming'' (October 1) made while Kim was on a site-guidance in Daeheungdan county, Yanggang province, North Korea propagandized that a great achievement had been made in the crop of potatoes in Yanggang province and Daeheungdan county.

o North Korea observed National Foundation Day at the Danggun Tomb October 3 in the presence of Kim Young-dae, chairman of the North Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation, and Yu Mi-young, chairman of the Unification Council for Dangun People (Korean people).

o North Korea's cabinet secretariat was actively supporting in the project of the Dae-an Friendship Glass Factory now under construction in Dae-an county, South Pyong-an province, with a grant from the Chinese government.

o Two-way trade between North Korea and Thailand in the year to July came to $173 million, up 33.1 percent from a year earlier.

- North Korea's exports reached $44 million, up 83.3 percent, while imports $129 million, up 21.7 percent, respectively.

2. Relations with South Korea


o Through its media services, North Korea demanded that South Korea stop an additional dispatch of its troops to Iraq and withdraw troops stationed there, saying that the South Korean military were sending special warfare forces to Iraq to build up experience in civilian operations for use ultimately in North Korea.

o On the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the conclusion of the South Korean-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty, North Korea described the pact as an aggressive military treaty that imposed shame and hardship on the Korean people and demanded the South to repeal it immediately.

o In connection with South Korea's move to register the Demilitarized Zone with UNESCO's World Heritage List, North Korea denounced the move as an "anti-nationalistic and nonsensical absurdity." The denunciation came in the form of a statement of the spokesman of the Committee for the Peaceful Unification of the Fatherland.

o In connection with the export of cyanide natrium, North Korea warned that it would watch South Korea's move, saying that Seoul's attitude was a matter of fundamental issue between mutual assistance between the Korean people or mutual assistance with external forces.

o North Korea said that it would not be looking forward to any progress in inter-Korean relationship unless Seoul cleared up its experiments with nuclear materials. The warning came through a statement issued October 3 by the spokesman of the Committee for the Peaceful Unification of the Fatherland.

- Meanwhile, in an interview with the KCNA October 6, the spokesman of the North Korean foreign ministry said that debate and explanation about the South Korean nuclear issue must precede further discussions on denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

3. External Affairs

o On the occasion of the 55th anniversary (October 6) of the opening of diplomatic relations between North Korea and China, there were exchanges of congratulatory messages between the top leaders of the two countries and vows of friendship and cooperation.

o Reacting to the North Korean Human Rights Bill passed by the US Senate, the spokesman of the North Korean foreign ministry described the move as another hostile declaration to Pyongyang, which revealed America's ulterior motive for the collapse of the socialist system.

o North Korea's vice foreign minister Choe Su-hern delivered a speech in the 59th U.N. General Assembly September 27-October 5 on Pyongyang's stand on its nuclear issue, according to the Central Broadcasting Station October 1.
