From April 8 to 14, the North Korean media reported Kim Jong Un’s public activities as follows: Kim 1) visited the Pyongyang Mushroom Farm, 2) participated in the 5th meeting of the 13th Supreme People’s Assembly, 3) observed the Dropping and Target-striking Contest of KPA Special Operation Forces - 2017, and 4) participated in a meeting to celebrate the 105th birthday of late founding father Kim Il Sung.
On April 10 and 11, the North Korean media reported economic achievements for each sector: the Pyonghcon Korean Pharmaceutical Factory met its target for the first half of the year; the mining complex in the Tukchang district exceeded its production target for the first quarter by 3%; the construction for the Kimilsungia-Kimjongilia greenhouse in Samjiyon County exceeded its daily target by 50%; and the Forestry Bureau in North and South Pyongan Provinces produced mine timbers and planted trees.
On April 11, the North Korean media reported that the North held a meeting in the People's Palace of Culture to mark the 5th anniversary of Kim Jong Un being elected as first secretary (at the 4th Party Congress on March 11, 2012) and first chairman of the National Defense Commission (at the 5th meeting of the 12th Supreme People’s Assembly on April 13, 2012).
On April 12, the North Korean media reported that space development is becoming essential for the progress and prosperity of the country and the people.
On April 14, the North Korean media reported that on the occasion of the 105th birthday of Kim Il Sung, the North published a one-volume revised edition of Complete Collection of Kim Il Sung’s Works, a chronological compilation of Kim’s works on Juche Ideology and Songun (military-first) principle.
On April 14, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country of the DPRK, in a statement, condemned the conservative camp regarding the impeachment and confinement of former South Korean President Park.
On April 8, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, argued that US air strikes on a Syrian air base (April 7) were “an unforgivable act of aggression against a sovereign state and that the North would bolster its defense capabilities in every way to cope with the US.
On April 11, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a Q&A session with KCNA reporters, condemned the US regarding the deployment of the USS Carl Vinson to the Korean Peninsula, declaring that “the US’s reckless moves for invading the DPRK have reached a serious phase” and threatened that “the DPRK is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the US.”
On April 11, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the General Staff Department of the KPA, in a Q&A session with KCNA reporters, denounced the US for not responding to the successful test-firing of the South’s Hyunmoo-II ballistic missile, adding that “the US’s blatant double standards cannot be tolerated.”
On April 13, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the Disarmament and Peace Institute of the DPRK Foreign Ministry, in a statement, declared that “the US introduced its strategic assets into the Korean Peninsula, ratcheting up military tensions to the maximum” and threatened that North Korea would retaliate to cast “nuclear thunder and punishment lightning” on hostile forces, giving them a “taste of real war” if the US acts rashly.
On April 14, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the General Staff Department of the KPA, in a statement, denounced “the extremely dangerous situation prevailing on the Korean Peninsula due to the Trump administration's reckless military provocation” and threatened that the North will always mercilessly foil all the provocative options of the US with the toughest Korean-style counteraction.
On April 14, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the Korean Jurists Committee, in a statement, said that US air strikes on a Syrian air base (April 7) are “an act of aggression and a war crime and the US should be punished in line with international law” and urged the international community to bring those responsible to justice.
