【Internal Affairs】

From May 13 to 15, the North Korean media reported Kim Jong Un’s public activities as follows: Kim 1) provided field guidance at an exhibition of utensils and tools, finishing building materials, and sci-tech achievements organized by the Ministry of the People's Armed Forces, 2) posed for a commemorative photo with KPA construction workers, and 3) observed the test-firing of the Hwasong-12, a newly developed surface-to-surface medium to long-range strategic ballistic missile.

 

On May 13, the North Korean media reported that Choe Ryong Hae, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), made a field survey of the Wonhwa Cooperative Farm in Phyongwon County.

 

On May 14, the North Korean media reported that a project for building the C1 chemical industry1 started.

 

On May 15, the North Korean media reported that the Nature Conservation Union of Korea and the Miranda Naturalists Trust of New Zealand made a joint survey of migratory birds along the west coast of North Korea.

 

On May 17, the North Korean media reported that a national sci-tech presentation in the field of fisheries was held.

 

On May 19, the North Korean media reported that a groundbreaking ceremony for Tanchon Power Station was held.

 

【Inter-Korean Affairs】

From May 13 to 18, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the Korean Council for Reconciliation and Cooperation, in a statement, condemned the South Korean conservative camp’s moves to rally again, denounced the conservative force regarding the 37th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, and instigated a fight against the rightists.

 

On May 18, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee, in a statement, criticized the ROK government’s response to the test-firing of the Hwasong-12 and threatened that the North would continue to strengthen its nuclear strike capability.

 

【Foreign Affairs】

On May 13, the North Korean media reported that North Korea’s permanent mission to the UN, in a press release, called the UN’s pressuring of member countries to tighten sanctions on North Korea a “frenetic hostile scheme” and argued that the UN should elucidate the legitimacy to do so before forcing member countries to implement sanctions against the North.

 

On May 15, the North Korean media reported that the chief of the Law Institute of the DPRK Institute of International Studies, in a statement, mentioned the Korean Interdiction and Modernization of Sanctions Act passed by the US House of Representatives and said that "the US will have to take full responsibility for the ensuing catastrophic consequences," adding that "the US should pursue conversion of the Armistice Agreement between the DPRK and the US into a peace accord and total removal of the hostile relations so as to help ensure lasting peace of the Korean Peninsula."

 

On May 16, the North Korean media reported that a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a Q&A session with KCNA reporters, squarely rejected the UNSC’s unanimous adoption of a statement condemning the North’s latest ballistic missile test and threatened that the complete weapons system will never be possessed exclusively by the US and that the day will come when the North can use corresponding retaliatory means.
